ANNVILLE, Pa. — Freshman Julia Lerner (Arlington, Va./Washington–Lee) won two matches and stayed undefeated in singles play during her collegiate career, but visiting Susquehanna University lost, 7–2, at the LVC Tennis Complex on Oct. 5.
Lerner beat her Lebanon Valley (9–2 overall) opponent in come-from-behind fashion at second-flight singles, 6–7 (1–7), 7–5, 6–3, to move to 5–0 in singles for the 2008–09 season.
Lerner teamed with sophomore Christine Crigler (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) at first-flight doubles to earn the other win for Susquehanna (3–2 overall). The duo of Lerner and Crigler won, 8–1, to improve to 3–0 together this season.
Lerner is a combined 9–1 in her collegiate career so far in singles and doubles.

LA PLUME, Pa. — Freshman Julia Lerner (Arlington, Va./Washington–Lee) stayed undefeated in singles play during her collegiate career, and Susquehanna University shut out Baptist Bible College, 9–0, in a neutral-site women's tennis match at Keystone College's Murray Tennis Courts on Sept. 26.
Lerner (4–0 in singles so far for the 2008–09 season) bested her Baptist Bible (1–8 overall) opponent at second-flight singles, 6–2, 6–2.
Senior Shelby Werronen (Concord, Ohio/Riverside) was a winner for Susquehanna (3–1 overall) at first-flight singles, 6-2, 6-2. Sophomore Christine Crigler (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) won a hard-fought match at third-flight singles, 6–1, 3–6, 10–3, and freshman Celsy Ehrgood (Washington Boro, Pa./Penn Manor) , sophomore Whitney Arcaro (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) and freshman Nicole Fleck (Scranton, Pa./Scranton) each blanked their opponents in fourth-, fifth- and sixth-flight singles, respectively, with identical scores of 6-0, 6-0.
Fleck (2-0 in singles and 1–0 in doubles in 2008–09) is undefeated in all facets of her collegiate career.
The doubles team of Lerner and Crigler stayed undefeated in 2008–09 by cruising past their Defenders opponents, 8–1, in first-flight action. Lerner and Crigler are 2-0 playing together this season.
Also winning in doubles play for the Crusaders were the teams of Werronen and Arcaro and Ehrgood and Fleck . Werronen and Arcaro won, 8–2, at second-flight, and Ehrgood and Fleck won 8–3, in the third flight.

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Freshman Julia Lerner (Arlington, Va./Washington–Lee), sophomore Christine Crigler (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) and junior Jessi Haas (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) each won two matches to lead Susquehanna University to an 8-1 win over host PSU–Harrisburg on Sept. 20.
Susquehanna (2–1 overall) swept the singles matches from Harrisburg (2–1 overall). Lerner won easy at second-flight, 6–1, 6–1, Crigler won, 6-3, 6-3, at third-flight and Haas took home a 6-3, 6-3 victory from the sixth flight. Other singles winners for the Crusaders were senior Shelby Werronen (Concord, Ohio/Riverside) in a back-and-forth match at first-flight, 7–5, 6–4, freshman Celsy Ehrgood (Washington Boro, Pa./Penn Manor) in a breeze at fourth-flight, 6–0, 6–1, and sophomore Whitney Arcaro (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) from the fifth flight with ease, 6–1, 6–2.
The team Crigler and Lerner captured a tough win at first-flight doubles play, 8–5. Haas and freshman Allison Killeen (Media, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) put their opponents away quickly at third-flight doubles, 8–1.
Sept. 14: Susquehanna 3, Misericordia 6 Box Score
DALLAS, Pa. — Freshman Julia Lerner (Arlington, Va./Washington–Lee) won a hard-fought match at second-flight singles, but visiting Susquehanna University fell to Misericordia University, 6–3, on Sept. 14.
Lerner topped her Misericordia (5–1 overall) opponent by a score of 7–6, 6–2. Also winning in singles for Susquehanna (1–1 overall) was freshman Nicole Fleck (Scranton, Pa./Scranton), who picked up a tight sixth-flight win, 2–6, 7–5, 10–5.
The team of junior Jessi Haas (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) and freshman Allison Killeen (Media, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) captured the other win for the Crusaders, defeating their opponents in third-flight doubles play, 8–2.
Sept. 10: Susquehanna 9, Lycoming 0 Box Score
SELINSGROVE, Pa. — Every Susquehanna University singles and doubles entry topped the visitors from Lycoming College in a 9–0 blanking at the tennis courts of the James W. Garrett Sports Complex on Sept. 10.
Senior Shelby Werronen (Concord, Ohio/Riverside) won a hard-fought match at first-flight singles for Susquehanna (1–0 overall), 6–4, 4–6, 10–7, over Lycoming (0–1 overall).
Freshman Julia Lerner (Arlington, Va./Washington–Lee) won at second-flight singles, 6–2, 2–6, 6–1. Sophomore Christine Crigler (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) won in straight sets from the third flight, 6–3, 6–1. Freshman Celsy Ehrgood (Washington Boro, Pa./Penn Manor) was an easy straight-sets winner in fourth-flight action, 6–1, 6–0. Sophomore Whitney Arcaro (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton Area) took a straight-sets victory from the fifth flight, 6–3, 6–0, and junior Jessi Haas (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville Area) wrapped up the sixth flight in straight sets, 6–0, 6–4.
In doubles, the team of Crigler and Werronen outmatched their opponents in the first flight, 8–6. Lerner and Arcaro blanked their opponents in second-flight play, 8–0, and the team of freshman Allison Killeen (Media, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) and Haas breezed to victory in the third flight, 8–1. |
