After graduating from Bloomsburg with a bachelor's degree in August 2002, Monaghan was hired at Bucknell University as an assistant men’s and women’s tennis coach. In 2003, he worked at the Doylestown Tennis Club as a staff pro and worked with juniors, adults and tournament-prep students while he taught private lessons and ran United States Tennis Association tournaments. Also during his time at Doylestown, Monaghan trained under the notable Jim Klein. Monaghan was taught the "Vic Braden system" and benefited from Klein's expertise in video-tape analysis and teaching techniques.

Monaghan got his start as a teaching-tennis professional as an assistant pro at the West Branch Tennis Club in South Williamsport, Pa., in 1990. In 1991, he became a certified teaching professional through the Vic Braden Tennis College. Monaghan then moved to Hilton Head Island, S.C., where he continued to teach at and for a variety of clinics and age groups.

In 1994, Monaghan worked for the Harry Hopman Tennis Academy in Wesley Chapel, Fla., where he trained world-class juniors and taught adult programs, private lessons and at clinics and worked with the staff to administer physical fitness training along and mental toughness to students.

While employed at the Hopman Academy, Monaghan observed the training of such tennis greats as Pete Sampras, Jim Courier, Jennifer Capriati, Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario and Gabriela Sabatini.
