The All-American BoysWonderlick Named First-Team as Five Crusaders Selected To Lutheran College All-American Football Team
SELINSGROVE, Pa. — Five Susquehanna University football players have been honored by Lutheran Brotherhood as members of its 2000 Lutheran College All-America Football Team, it was announced Thursday. Senior center Dave Wonderlick was the lone Crusader selected to the first team, while freshman split end Mark Bartosic, senior defensive end Frank Hanlon and sophomore defensive back Antonio Nash were named to the second team. Senior offensive tackle Randy Zook was an honorable mention selection. The quintet helped the Crusaders post their 15th consecutive non-losing season in 2000 as the team finished 7-3 overall (6-3 Middle Atlantic Conference, 2-3 Commonwealth League) under 11th-year head coach Steve Briggs. The 5-10, 245-pound Wonderlick (Shenandoah, Pa./Shenandoah Valley H.S.), a MAC Commonwealth League second-team All-Star for the second straight year, allowed just one sack in 358 pass plays this season. He was part of an offensive line that was recognized by D3football.com as members of its “Team of the Week” after Crusader backs gained positive yards on 36 of 39 running plays and sophomore quarterback Mike Bowman threw for a then career-high 306 yards in a 24-13 win over Dickinson on September 23. Wonderlick, the Verizon Academic All-American of the Year in College Division Football, was one of 16 senior football players in the United States honored as a National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Scholar Athlete. He was honored at the College Football Hall of Fame induction dinner in Manhattan on December 12 and will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship. Wonderlick is a public relations major and the son of Len and Louise Wonderlick. The 6-1, 185-pound Bartosic (Northumberland, Pa./Shikellamy H.S.) was the only freshman named to any of the Lutheran College All-American teams. He was named the MAC Commonwealth League Rookie of the Year after he made 51 catches for Susquehanna single-season records of 1,028 yards and 15 touchdowns during the 2000 season. He finished fifth in the MAC in receptions per game (5.1), third in receiving yards per game (102.8) and second in touchdown catches, and caught at least one touchdown pass in nine of Susquehanna’s 10 games and broke the 100-yard mark on six occasions. His best game of the season came in Susquehanna’s 52-33 loss to Moravian on October 28, when Bartosic caught nine passes for 208 yards and three touchdowns. Bartosic is a computer science major and the son of Karen Bartosic. The 6-4, 210-pound Hanlon (Mahanoy City, Pa./Mahanoy Area H.S.), a Football Gazette second-team All-South selection and a MAC Commonwealth League first-team All-Star, led the defensive line with 55 tackles (34 solo), ranked sixth in the MAC with 21 tackles for loss and finished eighth in the conference in sacks with eight. Hanlon, the Most Valuable Player of the 2000 Crusader football team, was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week after recording three sacks and forcing a fumble in the Crusaders’ 36-29 victory over Juniata at Lopardo Stadium on October 7. Hanlon is a history major and the son of Frank and Joan Hanlon. The 5-9, 170-pound Nash (Washington, D.C./Springbrook, Md. H.S.) was a first-team Lutheran College All-American last season. A two-time MAC Commonwealth League first-team All-Star and a Football Gazette second-team All-South selection , Nash shifted from cornerback to free safety following the season opener and finished the year second on the team in tackles with 74 (53 solo). He intercepted three passes to increase his careertotal to 13, and was named the MAC Defensive Player of the Week after making a career-high 13 tackles and intercepting a pass in the Crusaders’ 26-23 win at King’s on September 16. Nash is an accounting major and the son of Sampson Nash, Jr. The 6-5, 260-pound Zook (Belleville, Pa./Indian Valley H.S.), a Lutheran College honorable mention All-American for the second straight year, adds to an impressive list of postseason honors. He was named a Hewlett-Packard honorable mention All-American and a Football Gazette first-team All-South selection after earning MAC Commonwealth first-team All-Star as well as the MAC Offensive Lineman of the Year. He started all 10 games at left tackle and helped the Crusaders rank second in the MAC in total offense at 391.4 yards per game, third in passing yards per game at 257.4 and fifth in rushing offense at 134.0 yards per contest.
