Four-Star PerformanceKern Named Commonwealth All-Star For Fourth Time
SELINSGROVE, Pa. - Susquehanna senior center Karyn Kern has been selected as a Commonwealth Conference women's basketball first-team All-Star by the conference's eight head coaches, it was announced Wednesday. Kern (Brodheadsville, Pa./Pleasant Valley H.S.), who earned second-team honors as a freshman and sophomore and was a first-team selection as a junior, joins former teammate Kristen Venne (1995-99) and Crusader career scoring leader Deb Yeasted (1981-85) as the only Susquehanna players to earn All-Conference honors four times. Susquehanna has had at least one first-team All-Star in each of the last 12 seasons. Granted a fifth year of eligibility following a knee injury five games into last season, Kern tied for the Commonwealth Conference lead in scoring (16.8 points per game) and blocked shots (1.50 blocks per game) this year while leading the league in rebounding at 11.0 per contest. She posted 14 double-doubles during the 2000-01 season and 56 in her career. Kern finished her Susquehanna career as the third-leading scorer in school history with 1,773 points and the leading rebounder with 1,079 boards in 106 games. She also finished her career as the Middle Atlantic Conference career leader in field-goal percentage at 59.7 percent and ranked second in rebounding with 10.2 rebounds per game. A 2000 Susquehanna graduate with a bachelor's degree in psychology, Kern is pursuing a second degree in corporate communications and was named to the Verizon District II College Division Women's Basketball All-Academic second team last week. She is the daughter of Peter and Carol Kern of Brodheadsville.
