Three SU Kickers Honored as Conference Players of the Week
MADISON, N.J.; CANTON, N.Y. — Three Susquehanna University student-athletes were honored as either a Landmark Conference or Liberty League Player of the Week on Nov. 10.
Senior midfielder Matt Gawlas (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) was the Landmark's men's soccer Offensive Player of the Week.
Gawlas (left) scored the lone goal in Susquehanna's 1–0 win over The Catholic University of America on Nov. 8 in the 2008 Landmark championship game to give SU its first conference title. The co-captain controlled play from the midfield position for the Crusaders in both of their conference tournament wins. SU defeated The University of Scranton in the semifinals, 2–1, on Nov. 5 to become the winningest team in program history.

Sophomore goalkeeper B.J. Merriam (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern Regional) was the Landmark's men's soccer Defensive Player of the Week. Merriam (right) gave up just one goal while winning both games of the 2008 Landmark championships. He made three saves in all 93 minutes, 5 seconds of play against Scranton in the conference semifinals before shutting out Catholic in the final with two saves, including one on a direct kick with 31 seconds remaining in the game.

Senior outside linebacker/placekicker Dan Golias (Johnstown, Pa./Westmont Hilltop) was the Liberty's football co-Special Teams Player of the Week. Golias (left) went 7-for-7 in extra-point attempts in Susquehanna's 51–21 Liberty League win at Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Nov. 8. He was handling kicking duties for the first time this season in place of the starting SU placekicker, who was ill.
