Three Crusaders Named All-MAC in Football
SELINSGROVE, PA – Three Susquehanna University football players have earned first-team All-Middle Atlantic Conference honors as voted upon by the league’s 11 head coaches, the conference office announced Tuesday. Senior Mark Bartosic became the seventh player in MAC history to be named first-team All-Conference four consecutive years as he was selected at both wide receiver and a kick returner, while earning first-team honors for the first time were junior Mark Hamilton at offensive line and senior Adam Summers at defensive line. Susquehanna finished 4-6 overall and 4-5 in the MAC under 14th-year head coach Steve Briggs. Bartosic (Northumberland, PA/Shikellamy H.S.) led the MAC for the second straight season with 78 catches for 1,313 yards and 13 touchdowns and finished his brilliant career as the conference all-time leader with 275 catches for 4,733 yards and 55 touchdowns. The first player in NCAA history with four consecutive 1,000-yard seasons, Bartosic concludes his career ranked second in Division III history in receiving yards, tied for second in touchdown catches and sixth in receptions. Bartosic averaged 12.7 yards on 13 punt returns to rank second in the MAC and was third in the conference in kickoff returns with an average of 24.1 yards on 13 returns. Hamilton (West Chester, PA/Downingtown H.S.) started all 10 games at left guard as the Crusaders set a program record with 4,108 yards of total offense. The Crusader line allowed just 20 sacks in 10 games and helped clear the way for a MAC-record 724 yards of total offense in Susquehanna’s 45-14 win over Juniata on October 4. Summers (Abbottstown, PA/Mercersburg Academy) tied for sixth in the conference with 5 ½ sacks and was second among the team’s defensive linemen with 36 tackles, including 10 for loss. He recorded a career-high four sacks against Ursinus in the season opener on September 6. Wilkes junior running back Brett Trichilo was named the conference Offensive Player of the Year after rushing for 2,079 yards and 27 touchdowns, while Widener senior Thomas DeMoss earned Defensive Player of the Year honors after recording 7 ½ sacks and 67 tackles. Delaware Valley coach G.A. Mangus was named Coach of the Year after leading the Aggies from a 2-8 record in 2002 to an 8-2 mark and an ECAC playoff berth in 2003.
