LITERATURE AND CREATIVE WRITING CONFERENCE TO BE HELD AT SU

Feb. 18 Event Attracts Students From Across the Country

SELINSGROVE, ( Pa. ) – Lovers of the literary arts will converge on Susquehanna University Feb. 18 for the Fourth Annual Undergraduate Literature and Creative Writing Conference. Sponsored by the Department of English and Creative Writing, the Writers Institute at Susquehanna University and the Stellfox Fund, the conference will attract participants from as far away as Virginia , Kentucky and Minnesota .

The event's keynote speaker is Amanda Anderson, a professor of English literature at Johns Hopkins University . Her address, which is free and open to the public, begins at 12:30 p.m. in Degenstein Center Theater.

A specialist in Victorian literature and contemporary literary theory, Anderson's books include Tainted Souls and Painted Faces: The Rhetoric of Fallenness in Victorian Culture, The Powers of Distance: Cosmopolitanism and the Cultivation of Detachment and The Way We Argue Now: A Study in the Culture of Theory.

During the daylong event, undergraduates will present both literary research and creative works in a variety of genres. Presentations will include readings from original poetry, fiction and nonfiction, as well as scholarly writings on authors, literary works and the history of literature.

The conference will conclude with a reading by Bernard Cooper, art critic for Los Angeles magazine, at 4:45 p.m. in Stretansky Concert Hall of the Cunningham Center for Music and Art. Sponsored by The Writers' Institute as part of its 2008-09 Visiting Writers Series, the reading is free and open to the public.

Cooper has won numerous awards and prizes, including the PEN/Hemingway Award, the O. Henry Prize, a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Getty Center for the Arts and Humanities Fellowship. He has taught at Antioch University, Los Angeles, and at UCLA.
