SU THEATRE TAKES FRESH APPROACH TO WILDE MASTERPIECE
The Importance of Being Earnest is a Must-See September 20-23

August 31, 2007

SELINSGROVE, ( Pa. ) – Susquehanna University 's Department of Theatre will present a unique approach to the classic Oscar Wilde play The Importance of Being Earnest. Decadent scenery from the Art Nouveau movement and a surprise twist to the casting makes it the one show theater lovers won't want to miss this fall.

The play will be presented Thursday through Sunday, September 20 to 23, under the artistic direction of Associate Professor of Theatre W. Douglas Powers with scenic designs created by Associate Professor of Theatre Andrew Rich and technical direction by Assistant Professor of Theatre Erik Viker. The curtain will go up nightly at 8 p.m. in Degenstein Center Theater. Tickets are $7 for non-SU students and $10 for adults, and may be purchased by calling the university box office at 570-372-ARTS (2787).

Subtitled by Wilde as “a trivial comedy for serious people,” Earnest is about the comedy of errors surrounding the double lives of characters Jack Worthing and Algernon Moncreiff. In this, his last and arguably greatest play, Wilde presents a hilarious attack on Victorian manners and morals.

Signet Classic's 1985 anthology of the Dublin-born playwright calls the play “a dazzling masterpiece of comic entertainment [that] turns a pompous world on its head, lets duplicity lead to happiness and makes riposte the highest form of art.”

Susquehanna's twist on this Wilde classic is sure to make it even more entertaining. But to give away any secrets before show time would ruin the surprise. Just come prepared for belly-busting laughter in three acts.
