FAQ & Info about ERes

WHAT IS ERes?

ERes is an electronic reserves software package that enables the campus to electronically access academic information, which faculty place on Course Reserves as supplemental course readings, online.

WHAT ABOUT REGULAR COURSE RESERVES?

If a faculty member so requests, a print copy of a reserve item will be made available at the Circulation Desk for use in the Library. Also, if a full book title is requested to be put on reserve, it will only be put on regular reserve.

WHO CAN USE ERes?

Access is restricted to the Susquehanna University community. To help ensure compliance with current copyright restrictions, all users will be asked for a valid SU user name and password. This will authenticate users and permit access to course reserves from off-campus, even when the Library is closed.

HOW DO I KNOW WHICH RESERVES ARE AVAILABLE ELECTRONICALLY?

Course instructors should notify their classes when a course reserve is placed on ERes. For instructions on how to use ERes see below or pick up an instruction sheet at the Library's Circulation Desk.

HOW DO I ACCESS ERes? [Printer-friendly Instructions]

Reserve Materials can be electronically accessed, on or off campus, in one of three ways:

  1. From the Library's Home Page (http://www.susqu.edu/library/), select the EReslink located at the top of the Services menu, OR
  2. Go directly to the ERes URL: http://www.susqu.edu/library/eres/ OR
  3. From the Library's iLink (http://athena.susqu.edu/uhtbin/webcat/), select Reserve Desk and enter professor's name. Select the name from the search results and a list of reserve items for that professor will appear. Those items that are available on ERes will be so indicated. To access the document, click on the View button next to the desired item.

Once you reach the ERes welcome screen, click on Electronic Reserves and Course Materials OR the Main Course Index link. You will then be prompted to make your course or instructor selections. If you do not see your instructor's name on the Instructor List, then he/she has no reserve materials available in electronic format.

HOW DO I FIND THE DOCUMENT/ARTICLE I NEED? [Printer-friendly Instructions]

Once you are logged into the ERes system, the directions are fairly intuitive. Follow the on-screen commands. The procedure is as follows:

  1. Search for your course by department or by instructor,
OR use the ERes Quick Search to search for a specific course, instructor, department, material title, or material author/composer. After making selection, click Go.
  2. Make course selection from results list and click Go.
  3. Read the Copyright Notice then click Accept.
  4. Select the desired reserve material.
  5. ERes will open the program needed to read the material (i.e. Adobe Acrobat Reader, MS Word or MS Power Point).
  6. Close the document.
  7. Use the BACK button on your browser to navigate the system when no other options are available.

For quick system navigation, use the menu options in the right frame of the screen. These shortcut options will allow you to do the following:

WHAT TECHNOLOGY IS REQUIRED FOR ACCESS?
  1. A connection to the Internet, via the campus LAN or an ISP (Internet Service Provider)
  2. A version 4 class web browser (Netscape Navigator 4.05 or later, IE 4.0 or later)
  3. A version of Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your system, with the proper plugin enabled for your web browser
  4. A valid Susquehanna University account user name and password

If you need to acquire Adobe Acrobat, you can download it by clicking on the icon below.

Quick tips for faculty:

Ø      Please allow 3 days for materials to be processed and scanned onto the server.

Ø      If available, please provide a syllabus with your course reserve materials.

Ø      Include the full, complete citation for all reserve materials so students can properly cite them

Ø      Notify your students if you have placed reserve materials on the ERes system.

Ø      If you also have traditional reserve materials (i.e., books), remind students that they are on the regular reserve shelves in the Library.

Ø      Inform students that a paper copy of all materials is on file at the Circulation Desk for emergency use, should the ERes program become inaccessible.

Ø      Please contact Stephanie Thomas at x4022 with requests or questions.
