HEALTH CARE COVERAGE SYMPOSIUM

The Adams Center will convene a two day symposium to examine the state of health care coverage in America and question whether we should adopt a system of universal health care on March 25-26, 2009.  Jonathon Cohn, author of Sick, will be the keynote speaker.  Further details will be posted on this website as symposium planning proceeds.

PRESENTATION TO CENTRAL SUSQUEHANNA INTERMEDIATE UNIT SUPERINTENDENTS

May 13, 2009

Adams Center Director Allan Sobel, United States District Court Judge John Jones III, and Iowa educator Nancy Peterson, will provide three hours of continuing education to the 17 school superintendents of the districts in the CSIU on May 13, centered on issues of judicial independence, the rule of law, and how to teach about the justice system (or any other topic) in classrooms filled with students having different learning styles. Judge Jones authored the opinion in Kitzmiller vs. Dover Area School District, which held that public schools may not teach "intelligent design theory" in science classes in light of the constitutional requirement that church and state be separated. He found that intelligent design theory is merely a repackaging of creationism, a religious belief.

JUSTICE INSTITUTE
June, 2009
The Adams Center held a three day, residential summer institute, funded by the  Foundation for the Advancement of an Independent Judiciary and the Rule of Law, for middle and senior high school educators on June 24-26, 2008. The institute enriched the teachers' understanding of the judicial branch of government, allowed them to consider instructional strategies for justice system education, and helped them create units of study on the justice system that will be incorporated into their classes and meet the unique learning needs of a diverse learning community.
The Adams Center plans to engage in this work in the months and years ahead by holding similar institutes annually, the next in June, 2009; developing a website that shows the relevant Pennsylvania teaching standards, provides sample units of study on the justice system and links to other relevant websites, and gives notice of upcoming Adams Center programs for social studies teachers and education students preparing for a career as social studies teachers.
