Applying to Susquehanna

The Write Option

An alternative to the submission of standardized test scores

To participate, you must submit two (2) graded writing samples from your junior or senior year, the work in which is analytical or critical in nature. We advise you to select samples that demonstrate your ability to communicate complex ideas, theories, and opinions, and to write effective, well-supported arguments. We prefer samples that demonstrate your ability to apply knowledge gained in the classroom. Examples of such samples may include: an analysis of a book, a work of art, or a literary style; a position paper; a research project from a natural or social sciences course (e.g., chemistry, psychology, etc.).

The papers or essays you send as representative samples must contain analysis and not mere summary. For example, if you submit a paper about The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, it should not restate the events of the novel, but rather make some observation about the book. Some examples of questions your work may answer: Does it make use of literary devices? If so, to what end? Does it make a commentary upon society? What does the author's rendering of the characters mean? Does the book put forth new ideas or concepts that run contrary to prevailing ideas or norms? What have other critics or writers had to say about the novel? You may send creative writing samples in addition to, but not in place of, academic samples.
