Green Efforts at Susquehanna
Susquehanna University is committed to environmental sustainability. The university applies sustainable practices to everything from construction and energy use to academics to printing and publications.
Susquehanna’s embrace of green initiatives is grounded in its guiding values of good stewardship and ethical responsibility. On an institutional level, faculty and administrators weigh environmental considerations in the university’s ongoing operations as well as future planning. The highly anticipated $33 million science building scheduled to open in Fall 2010 stands as a best practice for sustainability and environmental responsibility. The facility’s construction practices and design are expected to earn LEED certification. It will join recently constructed residence halls in the West Village complex.
Sustainability also is an organic movement on campus. Student organizations such as Student Awareness for the Value of the Environment (SAVE) advance environmental concerns through educational programming and activities. Students participate in the annual RecycleMania college contest.
In the classroom, the university’s Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences engages students with the sustainability-related courses Climate and Social Change and Sustainable Energy Resources. One faculty member in the department spearheaded a solar panel installation on campus, while another was instrumental in the formation of the Committee on Sustainability.
