Five Crusaders to Compete at NCAA Track & Field Meet
SELINSGROVE, PA – A total of five Susquehanna University track and field athletes will be in action at the NCAA Division III Championships at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, with action beginning Thursday and running through Saturday. Senior Joe Wassink, juniors Mike Marr and John Calvo and sophomore Ray Snarski will be joined by senior Emily Lepley in competition at the championships, which will be held at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium in Oshkosh.
Lepley (Lewistown, PA/Lewistown) will be competing in both the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles for the fourth consecutive year, and is a two-time All-American in each event. Last year she finished third in the 100 hurdles and seventh in the 400 hurdles, and was the 2005 champion in the 400 hurdles.
Also a two-time All-American in the 55-meter hurdles at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, Lepley is the most-decorated female athlete in Susquehanna athletics history and would surpass Mike Spangler's mark of seven All-America honors set from 1985-88 should she earn finish in the top eight in both events this weekend.
She is seeded eighth in the 400-meter hurdles (1:01.85), which hold trials on Thursday at 6:20 p.m. and finals on Saturday at 4:25 p.m., and eighth in the 100-meter hurdles (14.47 seconds), which conduct trials on Friday at 6:00 p.m. and finals on and Saturday at 2:55 p.m.
Wassink (Staten Island, NY/Petrides School) is seeded 15th out of 17 runners in the 400-meter hurdles after qualifying with a time of 53.72 seconds at the Swarthmore Last Chance Meet on May 14. He is the first Susquehanna athlete to compete in the event at nationals since Jeff Walden won the second of his two straight championships in 1986. Preliminaries are Thursday at 6:00 p.m. with finals to be held on Saturday at 4:15 p.m.
Marr (Muncy, PA/Warrior Run) will be competing in the high jump at nationals for the second time this season after finishing ninth at the indoor championships in March. His mark of 6 feet, 8 ¾ inches set at the Middle Atlantic Conference Championships on May 4 placed him in a tie for fourth in the field of 18 jumpers. The high jump will be held on Friday at 7:00 p.m.
Calvo (Pennington, NJ/Lawrence) is entered in the pole vault after also participating at the indoor championships. He broke his own school outdoor record and matched his indoor mark of 16 feet, ¾ inch (4.90 meters) at the College of New Jersey Qualifier last Thursday to move into a tie for ninth out of 17 vaulters in the event. The pole vault is the first event to be held at the championships, beginning on Thursday at 2:00 p.m.
Snarski (Elysburg, PA/Southern Columbia) earned a berth in the javelin with a mark of 196 feet, 2 inches at the Bucknell Outdoor Classic on April 14. He is ranked 11th in the field of 16 throwers, and is the fifth different Crusader to compete in the event at the NCAA championships since 1997, all under the direction of throws coach Cris Delbaugh. Competition in the javelin will be held on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
