Capkin Named Second-Team Academic All-America

SELINSGROVE, Pa. – Susquehanna University senior Sean Capkin has been selected to the ESPN The Magazine CoSIDA College Division Academic All-America second team in men's track and field and cross country, as voted upon by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America and released Tuesday.

Capkin (Wynnewood, PA/Lower Merion) is the 16th different Susquehanna student-athlete to earn Academic All-America honors since the program's inception in 1952, and the first since Bob Haile was named to the third team in baseball in 2004.

He finished fifth in the 400 meters at the Middle Atlantic Conference Indoor Track and Field championships and was part of the 4x400-meter relay team that finished second at the MAC Outdoor Track and Field championships in May, helping the Crusaders to second-place finishes in both championships.

Off the track, Capkin graduated with a 3.98 cumulative grade-point average as a double major in elementary education and Spanish. He was a member of the Dean's List, a University Scholar, a member of the University Honors program, a Presidential Fellow, received the Blair Heaton Award as the outstanding male scholar-athlete at Susquehanna and was the MAC Scholar-Athlete in indoor track and field for the 2005-06 season.

He was also vice-president of the Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Honor Society and a member of the Kappa Delta Pi (education), Phi Sigma Iota (foreign language) and Sigma Tau Delta (English) honor societies.

Capkin was also a resident assistant, student director of the Language Center , held an assistantship position in the Admissions Office, was a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council and studied abroad in Buenos Aires , Argentina .

The Academic All-America Teams program honors 816 male and female student-athletes annually who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA, a 2,000 member organization consisting of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada .

To be eligible, a student-athletes must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.
