SELINSGROVE, Pa., Oct. 2 — Susquehanna University will induct six people into the SU Sports Hall of Fame at an on-campus ceremony on January 24, 2009.

The late G. Edward "Ged" Schweikert III (swimming & diving coach), Ian Smith '97 (men's track & field), Frank Krantz '93 (men's track & field), Judy Sholtis '86 (softball), Denny Bowers '00 (baseball/football) and Michelle Liechty '96 (women's volleyball/track & field) are the six new inductees.

Schweikert was the only coach in Susquehanna's men's and women's swimming & diving history until his death on June 15, 2008, after succumbing to cancer.

He was a Middle Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year in 2000, 2005 and 2007, and during the 2007–08 men's season, he led the Crusaders to an 11–0 record in dual meets.

Smith was an All–American at SU in the 100-meter dash and the 400-meter relay. He was the 1996 MAC champion in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and was part of the championship 400-meter relay team that same year to earn the outdoor championship meet's Co-Most Outstanding Performer award. He won the 100 at the 1997 championships as well and currently sits in third place in program history in the 100 and in first as part of the 400 relay.

Krantz was a two-time All–American and three-time MAC champion in the pole vault. He still sits second in school history in both the indoor and outdoor pole vault and was the men's track & field team's Outstanding Fieldman in 1993.

Sholtis ranks second in Crusaders history with 43 career wins and first with a .717 winning percentage and 1.32 earned run average. She is also second in career strikeouts with 323. Sholtis' 0.73 ERA in 1986 is the school's single-season record. She ranked third in all of NCAA Division III in strikeouts and ninth in ERA in 1984. She was a four-time all–conference honoree.

Bowers posted a career batting average of .371 with 108 hits and 68 runs batted in in 99 games. In 1998, he batted .435 with three homeruns and 25 runs batted in en route to earning all–MAC honors. In that same season, he started at least one game at six different positions. He also appeared in 28 games as a pitcher during his career and struck out 82 batters in 116 2/3 innings.

Bowers was also a two-time first-team all–MAC Commonwealth player in football. He was an all–region honoree and the conference's Defensive Lineman of the Year in 1999 after making 35 tackles, including seven sacks, and blocking three kicks. He is ranked second in Crusaders history in both tackles for a loss and yardage lost on those tackles. He is fourth all-time in sacks.

Liechty was a four-year starter for the Crusaders from 1992 to 1995. She ranks second in program history with 282 career blocks, fourth with 1,042 kills and sixth with a .295 hitting percentage. She was a two-time MAC Commonwealth all-star.

Liechty was also a standout for the women's track & field team. She finished third in the high jump at the 1994 MAC outdoor championships.

She shared SU's Outstanding Female Scholar-Athlete Award in 1996.
