Multimedia Center

The Multimedia Center serves as a support agency for academic instruction by providing collections of audio and visual materials and related services. In this capacity, the Center:

• Coordinates the Multimedia Reserves service in support of the instructional programs of the University (see Reserves Services section)
• Maintains audiovisual resources from a variety of commercial sources for use campus-wide
• Provides and maintains viewing and listening spaces, and equipment for In-House use
• Houses and maintains the Library's collection of music scores
• Provides editing services for students creating videos for class assignments (see below)
• Coordinates all operations and services to provide a complementary non-print component for the Library's print and electronic services

The Multimedia Center has purchased a disc cleaning unit for the care and maintenance of CDs and DVDs. For a nominal fee, staff in the Center will be happy to clean your personal copies of these items.

Use of the Collections

Media materials may be used on-campus for instructional and research purposes by members of the faculty and University staff. Since circulation times vary for different formats, please consult the Multimedia Center staff for details regarding conditions of use.

The primary purpose of the video and DVD collections is to support the curriculum. However, faculty, staff, and students may borrow these items for individual viewing if they are not imminently needed for classroom use. Scores and CDs circulate under the same policy used for books. Loan times vary for other media; copies of the policy are available at the Multimedia Center desk.

Audiovisual materials in the Library's collection are purchased for classroom use. These include:

• Compact disc recordings
• Audio cassettes
• Videos on DVD (VHS - when DVDs are not available)
• Scores

Equipment located in the Multimedia Center for In-House use with collections includes:

• VCRs
• Audio-cassette players and recorders
• CD players
• DVD players
• Slide projectors
• Turntables
• Cassette-to cassette and CD to cassette-recording stations

Individual Use of Media

The Multimedia Preview area on the Library's lower level houses equipment to support individual or small-group use of instructional media. Equipment in the Multimedia Preview area is intended for the internal use of audiovisual materials placed on Reserve in the Music Library or otherwise required for course-related use.

Media Requests for Classroom Use

Multimedia equipment requests are filled through the Center for Advanced Technology. To reserve equipment from CAT, please click here.

For non-equipment media requests, please select one of the forms below. Your request will be confirmed by email or telephone.

• To make arrangements to show a DVD or video in class, use this form.
• To submit requests to place DVDs, videos, language tapes, sound recordings or scores on reserve in the Multimedia Center, use this form.
• Forms are also available electronically at http://www.susqu.edu/library/request/medserv.htm or from the library's web page, under Request Forms, Multimedia Center services, fill out the appropriate form online.

Special Services

Video-Editing Station

The control room at the back of classroom 01, on the lower level of the Library, houses a non-linear editing and dubbing facility operated by the Multimedia Center staff. The room is equipped with a Casablanca® editing system with DVD-R capability for editing locally produced and recorded programs. The editing unit is also engineered to link to the five deck dubbing unit, so multiple copies of the final version of the DVD can be made simultaneously.

Instruction and assistance on the equipment will enable faculty and students to more readily produce videos and DVDs, make multiple copies of their productions, insert video clips from other video sources, and add text or commentary. The end result is the creation of more professional-looking media projects. Students can contact the Multimedia Center coordinator, Jeff Martin (x4549), to schedule an appointment to use the equipment.

Other Services

In addition to the above, the Multimedia Center provides additional services, some of which require advance notice. These include:

• Overhead transparency service
• VTEK Voyager unit to enlarge print to assist the visually handicapped
• Fee-based DVD and CD cleaning service

How to Purchase Media Materials
