One-Act Play Festival

Cultivating the Artist-Scholar Through Student-Directed Plays

Here’s your chance to immerse yourself in the performance and production of a major university theatre event. You get to run the show, taking what you’ve learned in the classroom and applying it to a real stage production. Students direct, design, produce and perform in five one-act plays, which are presented each spring over two nights. When the lights go up in Degenstein Center Theater, you’ll be at the center of the action.

There are plenty of roles to fill: actors, directors, set designers, lighting technicians, stage managers, costume designers and many others. Auditions are open to all majors and class years, although priority is given to theatre majors and minors. As an academic experience, successful participation in the festival earns one credit hour.

If you’re an actor, you’ll benefit from being directed by seasoned peers—a very different experience than faculty artistic direction. If you’re a director, you’ll translate your classroom and onstage experiences into a new artistic role. For technical theatre students, the festival offers nearly independent leadership opportunities, usually acquired only at the graduate school level. Susquehanna University theatre professors strike the right balance between encouraging student autonomy and providing guidance when needed.

In a nutshell, the festival allows you to experiment with the skills and abilities you have learned up to that point. As you progress in your academic career, you’ll hone your craft and be able to take on increased leadership roles. Sinking your teeth into the festival’s serious artistic productions prepares you for advanced study in graduate school or work in the professional theatre.
