Codi Heath ’11, Shamokin, Pa. | Communications

I like to play guitar and write music and lyrics, which are like poetry, so I originally planned on majoring in creative writing. But I’m now majoring in communications because of WQSU-FM, the university radio station. As a freshman I started deejaying a classic rock show Friday nights 9 p.m. to midnight. I loved it. My favorite passions are talking and making people laugh, and music, and I got to put all that together and talk to a lot of people. I even got a lot of calls from people who were listening back in my home town of Shamokin, Pa.

My sophomore year I was a DJ and the assistant operations manager, and now in my junior year I’m the operations manager, which means I both work with the professional staff and I’m in charge of about 30 DJs and the news and sports, promotions, production and management staffs.

Through my journalism professor, Gary Heller, I also did a year-long newspaper internship at the Daily Item in Sunbury. I was a copy editor intern, and I was allowed to be creative, selecting stories off the newswires and designing pages. Besides working as a Web writer in the Office of University Communications, I’m also a productions intern at Y106.5, the adult contemporary radio station here in Selinsgrove. Three mornings and Sunday nights I’m on the air with DJ Tom Morgan.

I’ve grown a lot more independent since coming to Susquehanna, and I also know I couldn’t have gotten any of my internships without the experiences the school has given me. I enjoy both newspapers and radio, but I must love radio because I couldn’t see getting up at 5 a.m. and going to Y106.5—without pay—for anything else.
